The Loenen Pavilion, located at the National Military Cemetery in Loenen, is a multifunctional building dedicated to commemorating Dutch victims of World War II and recent international conflicts. KOLEN is honoured to have supplied and installed the natural stone for this meaningful project.
With a footprint of 52×19 meters, the pavilion extends along one of the five fundamental axes of the site, resembling a horizontal white line among slender birch and pine trees. The serene atmosphere and unobtrusiveness are achieved through subtle architectural gestures. The narrow, compact structure is both intimate and open, subtly concealed by tree trunks yet clearly visible.
Strategically placed walls clad in natural stone and roof openings accentuate the interplay between open and closed spaces. These design choices create sightlines into, out of, and through the pavilion, maintaining a delicate atmosphere of light and tranquility while ensuring a seamless flow of functions.
The main area of the pavilion is an auditorium dedicated to gatherings and memorial services for the nearby National Veterans Cemetery. This space opens into a multifunctional hall that serves as an exhibition and information area, as well as a condolence space. The pavilion, which consciously distances itself from religious connotations, exudes a soothing natural ambiance through its unconventional open spatial layout, abundant natural light, and elegant choice of materials.
Our natural stone plays a crucial role in achieving the serene and harmonious design of the Loenen Pavilion. KOLEN is proud to be a part of this project, honouring the memory of those who served and sacrificed their lives.
